Lena Farms, Lena, Mississippi.

Spike, Sam and Sherry Brown.

Lena Farms, owned by Sam and Sherry Brown, is located in the beautiful rolling green hills that surround the small town of Lena, Mississippi. This bucolic setting is home to Sherry.

Today the farm is comprised of approximately 1,300 acres, of which 800 are used for cattle. The herd consists of 300 breeding age Angus females and 100 commercial cows primarily used as recipients.

The beginning of Lena Farms occurred in the Spring of 1991 when possessed with a lingering nostalgia for the country way of life, a passion for fine Angus Cattle, and a fervent desire to be reconnected with the land, Sam and Sherry purchased 88 acres across from Sherry’s home place.

Due to years of neglect, the land was covered with brush, brambles and thorny vines. To control this ungovernable accumulation of vegetation, eleven registered Angus pairs were purchased.

As new landowners, they formulated two declarations. The first was that they would respect the land, and operate on environmentally sound principles. The other promise they made was to raise only quality cattle that would be recognized as the elite in the industry.

Time passed rapidly. Other land was acquired and more cattle were purchased. The first major cattle acquisition came from the Van Dyke Angus Ranch in Manhattan, Montana. This was followed by the fortuitous purchase of the entire Gibbet Hill herd in Groton, Massachusetts. It was from Gibbet Hill’s manager, Bill Conley, that Lena Farms acquired its long time herd bull, CAF Beau Max 7782, who was the 1995 Reserve Grand Champion Bull at Denver. The offspring of these originally purchased females together with other outstanding acquisitions are now the foundation of the Lena Farms herd.
